Women Who Dared II

Ethel L. Payne
1911-1991

Ms. Payne was known as the "First Lady of the Black Press." She started her career in Chicago in 1951 and moved to Washington D.C. to cover the civil rights movement. She was known to ask the tough questions. She was one of the first black women accredited to the White House Press Corps. In 1972, when CBS hired her, she became the first black female commentator at any major national broadcast network.
Ms. Payne, I salute you.
